Forgiveness= motivational construct: process of decreasing inter-related negative resentment-based emotions, cognitions, When motivated to forgive= motivated to curb potential negativity occurring in interpersonal relationships motivated state aimed toward reducing relationship-destructive emotions, cognitions, Avoidance: physically avoid or avoiding psychological contact, eg: creating distance by keeping small talk to a minimum. Attack: thoughts & behaviours of retaliating. But also be motivated toward benevolence or forbearance: when perceived hurts are too great, forbearance & benevolence turn into unforgiveness. When we don"t forgive= avoid/attack motives: send message to offender that you don"t value the relationship, creating additional relational wounds. Fosters need to maintain good relationship with others. 2 observations: forgiveness contributes to well-being of specific relationship/ person who has offended, might be personally costly to the forgiver not always but could be. Well-documented mediator: of relationship between receiving apology & people being willing to forgive. People who are most willing to forgive are those who have highest empathy for offenders.
