PSY 805 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Insulin Resistance, Stressor, Telomere
Document Summary
Adjustment stress and coping lecture notes, week 2, september 19th. Somatic nervous system: innervates skeletal muscles, skin and sense organs, neural pathways send signals from the brain to the peripheral (efferent) or send signals from the periphery to brain (afferent), fight or flight response activates skeletal muscles. Autonomic nervous system: innervates (cid:271)ody"s (cid:448)is(cid:272)era (cid:894)organs, du(cid:272)ts and glands, smooth muscles, blood vessels) through pre- and post-ganglionic neurons: sympathetic: responsible for activating fight or flight response, parasympathetic: associated with relaxation. Endocrine system is a system of organs and glands that secrete hormones into the blood stream to send messages to cells and organs. Endocrine system works with sympathetic nervous system during fof activation. Glands and their hormones include gland hypothalamus (hormone corticotropin- releasing hormone, oxytocin and vasopressin), pituitary (acth and beta-endirphin), adrenal cortex (gc/cortisol), and adrenal medulla (epinephrine/norepinephrine) Injection of crh into brain of animals leads to anxiety like symptoms, increased fear and startle responses; injection if crh antagonist decreases anxiety.
