Ameliorative or transformative: small or large. Social interventions: social, community/ organization, individual/ small group. Social change and interventions can be negative. How do we know if it works: use: Ex: vaccines cause autism: but they don"t work! They victim blame but don"t change the negative environment that contribute to the child"s antisocial behaviours. Recent outbreaks of diseases that was believed to e extinct (measles) in canada. So what does work: methodological sound program evaluation (cid:1) (cid:1) Incidence: risk factor= organic causes+ stress+ exploitation/ protective factors= coping skills+ self esteem+ support system. Protective factors: high quality parental support, sense of mastery. Skillful: skills at problem solving, high ses, autonomy, high quality social skills. Never target risk factors: know the cause target the cause for risk factors. Ameliorative intervention: focus on risk/protective factors transformative intervention, focus on systemic issues prevention programs. Must hit more than one problem: varied teaching methods, sufficient dosage, theory driven.
