Study of how people influence others behaviour, beliefs and attitudes (personality) Helps us understand why many forms of social influence are so powerful. Humans have biologically based need for interpersonal cnnections. Even the threat of social isolation can promote unhealthy behaviour and compromise iq scores. Social exclusion hurts activates the same brain areas as physical pain (cingulate cortex) Social exclusion is felt like physical pain. Social exclusion can lead to unhealthy behaviours. Social influence processes (conformity, obedience) generally serve us well, unless accepted unquestiongly. Groups to increase chance of off spring, helps keep order, protect each other. Enhancement of easy tasks or disruption of difficult ones, elicited by the presence of others. Social facilitation: performance on an easy task is enhanced due to a certain group present. Disruption: performance on a harder task is disrupted when a group is present. Tendency to overestimate the impact of dispositional influences(internal) (personality, attitudes, intelligence) on other peoples behaviour.
