PSY 214 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Cometabolism, Cocaethylene, Khat
Document Summary
Made from coca shrub that came from south america where it was used to decrease fatigue and hunger in miners who worked long hours. Use to be used on coca cola. Natural substances: ephedrine, cathinone (khat) (cid:373)ephedro(cid:374)e/(cid:863)(cid:271)ath salts(cid:863) Wake up pills (used in the military, for students, and narcolepsy) Routes of administration: oral: coca leaves, beverages. Greater speed and concentration means greater effects and abuse potential. Absorption: water and fat soluble: co-metabolism with alcohol cocaethylene (tends to act like cocaine but is more potent than cocaine) They have longer half-lives than methamphetamines: methamphetamine. Cocaine affects nt systems dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin: know that it affects these other nts too than just dop. Primarily dopamine for psychological effects and serotonin for pharmacokinetics. Same for ne: not just our brain but also our cns and pns. Both can lead to psychosis symptoms like mimicking schizophrenia symptoms. Pns side effects: increases activation of sympathetic systems.
