Process of addiction takes time and does not happen overnight. Time window varies depending on the type of drug. High stimulants (e. g. cocaine/methamphetamines) opiates (e. g. oxycontin, heroin, codeine, morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone) used as analgesics) nicotine alcohol marijuana (without major psychiatric disorder) caffeine. *directly correlated to dopamine system = seeking system . The higher up the list, the shorter the time window from abuse to addiction. Occasional use does not build dependence over one or a few uses. Use caffeine, alcohol, marijuana with no consequences. Abuse depends on the size of the dose (e. g. binge drinking every weekend vs. drinking a glass every night)
