PSY 805 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Avoidance Coping, Cognitive Restructuring, Personalization
Document Summary
Adjustment, stress and coping lecture, november 7th coping. Coping: cognitive and behavioral efforts that a person engages in to manage specific external or internal demands that are appraised as exceeding the resources of a person. Problem-focused coping: making a plan and following it. Emotion-focused coping: got busy with other things which helped them feel better. Support-seeking coping: trying to get emotional support from friends/relatives. Problem-focused vs. emotion focused = managing stressor vs. managing your perceptions/emotions of the stressor. Avoidance vs. approach = engagement with vs. disengagement from stressor. Problem-focused coping + approach coping = plans, instrumental support, active coping. Problem-focused coping + avoidance coping = issue avoidance, behavior disengagement. Emotion-focused coping + avoidance coping = denial, distancing, mental disengagement, social withdrawal. Goodness of fit hypothesis: coping most effective when there is a good fit between the coping strategy and the amount of control you can exert over the stressor.
