Document Summary

Population: the entire set of all items under study. In inferential stats, the parameter is usually the information you need. Sample: a set of items/data drawn from the population. Can be large, but always less than the population. Involves arrangement, summary and presentation of data to enable interpretation. A set of methods of organizing, summarizing and presenting data in a convenient way. The method depends on the info you need (measures of central location and/or measures of variability/dispersion) Describes the data but doesn"t allow conclusions or inferences to be made about the data. Describes methods used to draw conclusions about populations (bigger) based on sample (smaller) data. Used specifically to draw conclusions/inferences about characteristics of populations based on sample data. We use statistical inference to make inferences about parameters. Categorical/qualitative: variables that have values that can only be placed into categories such as yes/no.
