SSH 205 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Relativism
Document Summary
Chapter 2: impediments to critical thinking: impediments that arise from a haunted mind (how we think, self-interested thinking: Self-interested thinking can happen when we accept a claim solely because doing so supports or fits with out own interest(s). Examples: we shouldn"t have a final exam because i don"t like exams, the city of toronto should lower property taxes because i don"t like paying so much, you should go out with me because i like you. Self-interested thinking can also happen when we accept a claim because we want to save face. Examples: the judge who found me guilty was obviously biased against university professors, i didn"t get the part- the person who did must know the director, he said no ! Group pressure can take a couple of forms: peer pressure: the pressure from one"s peers to believe the same things they do, we"re the best : the belief that the group one belongs to is the best.
