SSH 301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Qualitative Research, Grounded Theory
Document Summary
Qualitative research does not have clear-cut rules for data analysis. Qualitative data analysis comprises a range of approaches to textual analysis. Researcher also has a lot of control. Iterative means repeating, as in a problem-solving method in which a succession of approximations; each building on the one preceding, is used to achieve a desired degree of accuracy. Qualitative analysis tends to be an iterative process. In order to analyze interviews, we need to use transcription to produce texts that we can describe, analyze and interpret. Transcribing is not merely a technical task. Turning an interview that was tape recorded into written text involves many decisions (difference between spoken word and written) Should aim for a reasonable approximation of the interviews words and intentions. Is a key operation to make sense of data. Analysis is shaped by the meanings constructed by the producers of the texts (interviewees; any source materials) and the researcher"s interpretations.
