Instinct: knowledge that you are born knowing how to do-not taught but we do learn to regulate some instinctual behaviours. Infants suckle when they are hungry, we all need to sleep, we all need to ingest food and water to and excrete waste to physically survive. Beyond these needs, ho(cid:449)e(cid:448)er, (cid:373)ost of (cid:449)hat (cid:449)e thi(cid:374)k of as (cid:271)ei(cid:374)g (cid:862)i(cid:374)sti(cid:374)(cid:272)ti(cid:448)e(cid:863) is socially constructed and socially acquired, even if we are unaware that we are actually learning these skills and responses. There are a number of instincts that are actually misnomers common ones: survival instinct, a mothering instinct, sexual instinct. For example, when you go to class, you can sit through a two hour lecture without taking off all of your clothes and masturbating and/or having sex (cid:449)ith other people i(cid:374) the (cid:272)lass. The (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:272)ept of (cid:862)(cid:272)o(cid:373)pulsor(cid:455) heterose(cid:454)ualit(cid:455)(cid:863) pla(cid:455)s a role in regulating and constructing who we are attracted to and whom we sexually desire.
