Crime: violation of cultural norms which are enacted into law. All crime is a deviant behaviour but not all deviant behaviour is criminal. Crime and deviance is not static: it differs by place and changes over time. Consensus crimes: the public mostly agrees that the behaviour is criminal: murder, rape, etc. Conflict crimes: these are acts which are illegal but there are a number of people who think it should not be illegal ex. Social deviation: not illegal acts but behaviour that society believes is serious and harmful ex. Social diversions: behaviour that is distasteful, harmless but seen as cool to others. Negative sanctions: punishments for violating norms, through the police and or the courts (law, compensations) or includes the use of medical system (mental health practitioners - therapeutic) Sometimes the two sides, individuals and the state, can be brought into healing with conciliatory (federal government and aboriginals) Positive sanctions: rewards for conforming to expected behaviour.
