Lower classes questioned those in power - why? . Ex: shoe makers now working for someone else, their product is no longer theirs. Questionable working conditions - child labour (low wages) Emergence of a complex class system - capitalism. Unemployed people were willing to work for a wage that someone else is unwilling to work for. Constant cycle for people that own means of production to continue. Economic system in which raw materials and the means of production are collectively owned. Owned by the state as opposed to privately owned. An attempt to address the needs of the majority. Working class coming together to have some sort of power. Scientific methods begin to explain previously unknown phenomena. Systematic study for the production of knowledge was heavily influential in early sociology. Writings are the foundation of contemporary sociology. Important transition: from thinking about individuals to thinking about social groups. Coined the term sociology and is considered the founder.
