Defining elements of social stratification: a characteristic of society. Objective existence, not just individual differences: universal but variable. All societies have systems of social stratification, now and historically. When society was more technologically simple, the systems of social stratification were more simple. Now that societies are more technologically complex, the systems of social stratification are also more complex (hierarchies of age and gender, complex division of labour, convoluted mishmash of intertwining status factors: persists over time. Systems of social stratification have always been there and evolves as develops with society. If someone moves up in the system, the system is still there. The recognition of mobility within in the system is testimony to the s(cid:455)ste(cid:373)(cid:859)s e(cid:454)iste(cid:374)(cid:272)e. Income: the money an individual earns in terms of salary/wage, government payments, property, etc. Wealth: all things of worth that an individual or family controls (buildings, art, coin collections, companies, etc, possessions/valuables that are owned.
