Lecture 3
The Culture Industry Thesis
3 Strategies:
1) Standardization : an system of cultural production with built in audience response system
marked by predictable conflicts, outcomes, moment of tears (Rom Com) or fear (Horror)
2) Commodification: popular entertainment - and entertainers - came to act as commodities
with a host of external components such ad marketing tie-ins. For example: drake,
adidas, Raptors
3) Pseudo industrialization: cinema genres, for example, become more closely assigned
and redact and in turn rely on he illusion of individuality.
- While there are differences in film, these differences amount to merely a pseudo-
industrialism that serves to mask the fact they style and form of film8is identical to all others
- Ultimately, these Differences sim ply mask the fundamental uniformity of all its
products.
The pop films work by letting us experience what we expect to experience from a particular
genre .
Social representation : - reflections of ourselves in what we consume from pop culture
a) Allows us to classify each to compare and explain behaviours and to objectify each other
as part of our social setting (he/she doesn't belong here)
b) established an order which enables us to locate ourselves I our material and social
worlds
c) enables communication within a community by providing us with a code for social
exchange , and for naming and classifying the various aspects of the social world and
our (and others) group history \
EX: Fuck boy - you can see how successful the term become - behaviour, personality and
etc; sense of truth and success.
Representing Class:
Emilie Durkheim’s Collective representation
The processes of “collective meaning making resulting i common understandings which
produce social bonds uniting societies, organizations and groups
Common ways of conceiving, thinking about and evaluating social reality
For ex, systems of inclusion and exclusion in which out belonging (to a group) is an
interconnected social system
3 Types of Representation :
1) Hegemonic (rykovodyashii) Representation: Shared by most of the members of a
socially structured group: representations that are safe, predictable and common sense -
Canadians are polite, humble and hard working
2) Emancipated Representation: Refers to subgroups (subcultures) that create their own
representation with a certain degree of autonomy with respect to the interacting
segments of society: youth subcultures for ex, a desire to create self-representation.
3) Polemic representation : related to social conflicts, struggles between groups and
controversies in a society. For ex, representation in which difference is recognized,
realized and /or emphasized. For ex, pop culture pay a significant role in shaping social
reality in terms of our conceptions of class wealth and poverty as well as race, gender,
sexuality and expectations. AN common example in found in the Teacher Saviour
Genre: a narrative structure that features : a) an inner city setting b)a teacher or a
principle acting as the main character or Hero. Serious dramas in which the educators
struggle to save their inner city minority students fro the dangers and dead-ends of their
lives.
