Racializing Identities
The concept of Race
- The meanings of race are historically specific in meaning different things to different
people in different places at different times
- Acts as a base for the formation of social groups as they have shaped the formation of
real or imagined communities of people
- Both represent the lived experiences of individuals and groups and reveal clear and real
dimensions of social inequality
Semiotics
- Critical race theorists have used not only a sociological approach when examining the EI
(entertainment or pop culture) but have used semiotics as well
Signs are made up of:
- Signifiers- the word or image from which the sign takes
- Signified- the concepts and ideas they represent
- Together they create a complete sign
- Semiotics examines how meaning is constructed, interpreted and understood through
signs we create, including cinematic & televisual words and images
- (what do things mean), the image often has a corresponding narrative
Race and ethnicity in popular culture
- As our discussions have revealed over the past few weeks, negative or stereo typical
representations in media have real consequences
- Such representation not only reflect but also reinforce the marginality of minor groups
- For ex.
- “reality is that which is experiences is real” and a breaking down of the stereotype
Ethnicity & race
Ethnicity:
- Usually associated with social characteristics which a recognized symbolism
- Customs, beliefs, ideas, language, history, politics, and other symbols that hold the
group together and recognized as a part of one’s identity
- Little Italy, Portugal village, the Danforth represent ethnic enclaves” in Toronto for ex
- These can act as a primary identification model for those outside the area
