Document Summary
The limits of debate in the news media. Mainstream news media are ideological, they actively practise a selection of issues, stories, and sources which are all value-laden to support and maintain the ruling elite"s position of power. The notion that news reflects the consensus is itself ideological . News media are actively involved in defining that consensus. They defend the legitimacy of the dominant worldview, which is geared around the production of the status quo of social relationships. The middle ground where journalists and news media are located is the site where common sense (ideological) assumptions are produced, reproduced, and circulated. Tensions exist between the apparent right of the media to provide information to use, the public, and the state"s need to censor certain information from being disseminated to the public. The public needs to be very critical of all news" stories. First war to have large scale television coverage.
