For example even though women physically give birth to children, they do not as a. natural extension of this also know instinctively how to cook and do laundry and dishes. Gender is socially constructed to the extent that what it means to be a man (masculine) or a woman (feminine) is taught to us through representation of gender roles. Traditionally it begins with our parents modelling gender appropriate behaviour. Seeing mom in the kitchen cooking a meal and dad outside fixing the car are, for some, early gender socializing practices although socialization begins prior to birth. Children are socialized into gender appropriate roles from as early as parents know the sex of the child. Paint the room pink for girls, blue for boys, the choice of toys, clothes etc. Gender in this way is represented through symbols that are also gendered.
