Document Summary

Problem: there are 2 causes of social mobility. Social mobility can result because society has become more open: a persons social position is less dependent on their social class, a persons social position is dependent on achievement. Social mobility can result of structural change: change in size of each social class, so forced mobility happens. People are forced to move up because there"s not enough positions in the lower class jobs. Social mobility table contains 2 types of mobility. Problem is we only use level of achievement as our measure of openness. Need to mathematically base measurement of equal opportunity on mobility resulting from achievement: exchange mobility= total mobility - structural change. Using social class allows us to see degree of inequality in society: allows us to see size of each group, over time, allows us to see change in each group. Use income or wealth to determine level of inequality in society.
