Was established in response to the conditions of the industrial revolution- late 29th and early 20th century: was because of people moving into cities to work in industrial settings, moving away from family as a basis. Desire to understand the nature of change to social life and social problems in cities: change from rural to urban creates different rankings and stratifications (classes of people) Structural function: stability, everyone doing their function and having their place. If all the little parts do what they are supposed to then society will run smoothly. Social-conflict: as long as you have a group of people together that has inherent differences, conflict is inevitable, some people have different incomes, more power, etc. Symbolic interaction: micro level, what individuals do that attach meaning, society comes from our individual attempts to do things. Gemeinschaft (rural country or village: family, people are working in agriculture, know your neighbours well.
