Document Summary
Representation: representation as reflection/distortion of reality, critique of representation based on idea of reflection, representation as constitutive of meaning. Enlightened witness - bell hooks: the issue is not freeing ourselves from representation. It"s really about being enlightened witnesses when we watch representations, which means we are able to be critically vigilant about both what is being told to us and how we respond to what is being told (p. 8). Cultural studies: premises and commitments: cultures must be studied within social systems/relations, focused on making individuals sensitive to how relations of power and domination. Encoded in cultural texts: aimed at social transformation; de-naturalizing systems of inequality (which induce consent, refuses simple concepts of cultural industry thesis .
