SOC 603 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Class Discrimination, Heterosexism, Homophobia
Document Summary
Intersectional approach: recognize how modes of oppression interact on a personal, societal (etc. ) level. Modes of oppression create one another (racism sexism heterosexism) When focusing on one form of oppression you can trace it to other forms. Henry lewis gates jr. (harvard professor): man, black, working class. Homophobia, misogamy, classism operate on gender and through gender. Medical knowledge is influenced by society, culture, social structure, values, beliefs. Biological categories of male and female are recent developments. Sex is thought of in terms of differences. Prior to the enlightenment: there was a one sex model (fundamentally, the male and female are the same: the only difference being that the female organs were internal while male were external) Entire female body and reproductive system was inferior. Sex ranged from the perfect (male) form to the imperfect (female) form. No differences besides the genitals in the one sex model. Other parts of the body did not have sexes ascribed to them.
