History and development of families: religious beginning. Patriarchal theory = head of the house": god given (old testament, new testament, quran etc) Wife and the children were required to obey the patriarch as the patriarch was the legal and religious property: examples are in the vows that the bride says that she"ll obey their husbands, there"s no corresponding vow. Biological determinism (darwinism) that because men held such an important role in society, they we"re naturally the head of the family. Contemporary theories: 1880s the founding theories of sociology begin here. Durkheim structural functionalist, liberalist: how society functioned around work, how society functions around the order of stability, in order for the society to function it needs stability and order. Meaning, everyone must conform: durkheim was interested in suicide, and what happens when people don"t do what they we"re told. Structural functionalist with some biological deterministic assumptions as re ected for this time.
