Hegemony: definitions and practices of masculinity may supplant others as hegemonic. It may be that very few men might occupy the hegemonic position. Men are not only organized hierarchically in relation to women, but also to: he is ridiculed for not having not become a nurse. Allows for resistance on the part of men who are subordinated or marginalized by the hegemonic form by way of the workings of hegemony itself: a negotiation predicated on coercion and consent. For example, traditionally, in many societies, gay men have a subordinate relationship to hegemonic models of masculinity, but have exercised social power to resist this in claiming and winning legitimate social and political spaces. The sociology of masculinity concerns the critical study of the engendering, Masculinity exists as both a positive, in as much as it offers a means of identity significations for males, and as a negative, in as much as those males.
