Looking at history of surveilling of intimate lives of gay men, see social and political surveillance that has long been in place. Deviance is only called into existence by way of surveillance. With surveillance out of the picture, deviance wouldn"t exist. How to do the history of homosexuality (david halperin, 2002) As socially constituted categories, heterosexualiyu and homosexuality are not objective but rather operate as subjective fields (category) Subjective: indicating dominant cultural inclusion or exclusion within defined social spaces - ie. a workplace. So-called normal and abnormal categories as objective, neutral and true . Categorization being free of social, cultural and political influences . Heteronormativity; regulatory forces direct the proliferation of normal sexual identities, genders and bodies. As such may compel regulated performances of gender and sexuality. Eg. regulation reductions of identity and rendered intimacy. Binaries of good/bad, normal/deviant, civilized/vulgar are normalizing, marginalizing an surveilling.
