SOC 705 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Class Conflict, Fidel Castro, Sociological Theory
Document Summary
Social construct theory: unwritten contract where people sign off certain rights and freedoms over to the government in exchange for protection; certain people (such as police) watch to make sure the civilians are following the rules within this contract. Locke: believed that we always had guiding forces; pre-political, not pre-moral; we didn"t need a written body of law to dictate how we behaved. Norms standards governing behaviours in any society/ social expectations about correct or proper behaviours (punishment, usually informal eg. ostracism) Customs rules of conduct in defined situations that are of relatively long duration and are generally observed without deliberation (eg. traditions) Laws codified rules governing behaviours in society (punishment, usually formal, eg. imprisonment; financial damages) Laws and customs sometimes operate simultaneously eg. inheritance pattern/law (hereditary monarchy; inheritance tradition) Power: one"s ability, in a social relationship, to advance his/her will/goals, even in the face of resistance.
