Law enforcement & sw continue to be viewed as extension of colonization: agents of social control instead of social change. Intervention within aboriginal communities= approach that is community controlled & culture based: holistic. Include interventions that centre on community awareness: healing processes for family, alternative to present criminal justice system. Aboriginal ppl tend to introduce themselves & begin relationships before moving to a task. Closest definition of violence that fits with aboriginal perspective= feminist definition. Violence goes beyond individualizing links it to wider society and system. Consequence of colonization, forced assimilation, and cultural genocide: learned negative, cumulative values, beliefs, and attitudes practiced by people, weaken or destroy harmony and well being of aboriginal. Right to use violence to maintain domination = belief that it is morally right to do for preserving order. Family & community is valued above an individual.
