Week after reading week, first half of class you will brainstorm possibilities with a group with an opened book. Second half will be closed book and individually. Group: 30 mins presentation, 10 min interactive = 40 mins total. Power relations definitions: power relations have always existed throughout society where ever there is an ability of one individual or group able to coerce, oblige, command, direct or influence the life or lives of others, ex. Etc: strategies where we can use our power in a productive fashion. In many cases it is detrimental to those affected. On the other hand society can not exist without some sort of ordered hierarchal arrangement; parents-children; teachers- students; employer-employee, government-citizens. Marx: power relations student/educator, practitioner/client in neither inherently good nor bad but each is clearly dangerous (foucault, 1980a, gordon, 1980, foucault, 1988, Social location so what: all include isms, social location can include or exclude us.
