Hypothesis= cause & effect relationship between iv & dv. Condition 1= intervention (iv) must precedes time the client"s improvement in a goal (dv) Eg: social worker is planning to intervene & suddenly the client improves: unethical to claim success for intervention. Condition 2= association must be found between intervention & client improvement in goal. That improvement has been caused by the intervention. Determine change from pretest to post test. Association should not be equated to causal relationship. Condition 3= cause of client improvement must be due to, or partly due to, worker"s intervention. Many other factors may claim their spot in improvement. These factors are called extraneus varibale: often viewed as confounding or interfering with relationship between iv & dv.
