Class 14
Terrestrial Interiors - the interiors of the planets are divided into layers - density.
•Crust - Layer of the earth that contains the solid continents and the seafloor.
•Mantle - layer of the earth just interior of the crust.
•Lithosphere - earths crust and small portion of the upper mantle that make up Earth’s plates.
This layer of Earth undergoes tectonic activity.
•Core - the central region of earth, surrounded by the mantle. The central region of any planet
or star. It is made up of iron and nickel.
•Seismograph (seismology) - the study of earthquakes and the waves they produce in the
Earth’s interior.
•S-waves - shear waves from an earthquake, which can travel only through solid material and
move more slowly than p-waves.
•P-waves - pressure waves from an earthquake that travel rapidly through liquids and solids.
•Chemical Differentiation
-Venus is just a scaled down version of the earth – but we aren’t quite sure, and to get this info
you have to be on the surface but Venus is so hot
-Reason why they star off molten — heat comes from accretion process.
Some material that forms in here is different densities
Chemical differentiation: As they go down they give off heat – give off heat energy – produces
heat internally. Many atoms are radio active isotopes – they give off heat.
Loose heat through processes
1.Radiation – at surface acts like blackbodies, radiates energy off into space
2.Conduction – heat will move from where its hot to not as hot
3.Convection – if acts like liquid or gas, expansion, becomes less dense, moves up and transfer
heat and goes back down again
Notes:
•The more violent the earthquake, the further the wave goes.
•Waves change their direction when the density of the material changes. These waves slowly
curve.
