Socialization
What is socialization?
Definition: processes through which people are taught to be proficient members of a society
-Describes the ways that people:
-come to understand societal norms and expectations
-to accept society's beliefs
-to be aware of societal values
-not the same thing as socializing
-sociological processes that occurs through socializing
-even the most basic of human activities are learned
-physical tasks
-material culture
-non material culture
-We depend on social interaction to provide the information and skills that we need to be part of society
or even to develop a self
Necessity for early social contract demonstrated by Harlow and Harlow
-Rhesus monkeys, mesh wire mother (food) vs soft terrycloth mother(no food)
-Research proved that social comfort was more valued
