55 views5 pages

Document Summary

When you are writing an academic essay, you need to prove to your instructor that you understand the information and also that you are able to come up with your own ideas about the information you are reading/watching. The way you do this is by writing a paper that takes a stance. The academic essay is generally thought of in three parts but these parts become expanded as you work through them. 1-3 sentences long and is part of your opening paragraph. A thesis statement is often stated early on in the paragraph in order to capture your reader"s attention and to let them know what you intend to argue throughout the paper. It may also come at the end of your introduction after you have properly provided context for your thesis statement and the paper as a whole. Remember that the thesis statement is part of your introductory paragraph, it is not a stand-alone sentence!
