Loss of the north: northern barbarian tribes kept up steady military pressure, gradually lost ground to northern invaders, factional politics prevented the song court from unified set of policies. Demographic change: han dynasty 60 million mostly living in north, southern part has great dynasty but nit developed by the han, tang dynasty most population in north, but southern migration started- yangzi.
