Document Summary

Bisc202 lecture 27: gene regulation and the lac operon. Genes are expressed where and when they are required. The amount of gene expression is tightly regulated. The various ways of expression of genes determines a cell"s structure and function. Ex. ) a muscle cell has long shape, can contract because it expresses genes that make actin and myosin (making up the contractile fibers of the cell) Gene regulation is important to study because: Mutations in regulatory genes can make a cell become a cancer cell. Understanding gene regulation is important for stem cell research. Major advances in producing induced pluripotent stem cells (ipscs), which are stem cells made from a few cells taken from skin. This could lead to a new type of medicine where stem cells are used to repair and replace damaged tissues. Operon = cluster of structural genes that is co-ordinately regulated by a single promoter region.
