BPK 140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Heart Failure, Cardiovascular Disease, Foam Cell
Document Summary
Heart becomes too weak to pump blood. Plaque that makes blood vessels stiff, narrows the blood vessel. Viral infection can damage blood vessel walls. Elevated levels of ldl are assoc. w/ increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Excessive amt of ldl is susceptible to oxidation by oxygen-free radicals aka ros (reactive oxygen species) Tends to penetrate blood vessel wall and cause damage to it. Damage to blood vessel wall activates immune system. Primarily t lymphocytes come, helper t cells, also macrophages come. When macrophages consume the oxidized ldl, there"s no sign to get the macrophages to stop, so they eat too much ldl and become filled w lipids. Then they turn into a diff type of cell - foam cells. Foam cells stay put and stick to the blood vessel and becomes a fatty streak. Everyone pretty much has fatty streaks (rmbr this is a chronic.
