Document Summary

Contributed by the deadline? yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. I have focused on jim and his dilemma. The decision jim is faced with is a case of utilitarianism vs deontological ethics. In other words, the ends justify the means vs the ends never justify the means. One could argue either way about what jim should do, based on one"s beliefs. One may feel that jim should do whatever necessary to save as many lives as possible, and that killing one to save many is morally permissible in this case. A counter to that is to say that killing is wrong no matter what, and one cannot make the assumption that the lives of many are more valuable than the life of one. Society in general would likely support the utilitarianism philosophy, and say that doing wrong in the pursuit of saving lives is in fact to do right.
