BPK 305 Lecture 10: Vascular Smooth Muscle
Document Summary
Vascular system: arterioles -> the importance of being small, they are important because they regulate resistance. Blood can be shunted between organs according to demand by regulating the radius of the arterioles: ex. Feel sleepy after a big meal -> blood is being shunted to the digestive tract and away from other areas. Resistance is high: small radius = high resistance, there is a large drop in pressure through the arterioles due to high resistance. Site of regulation of resistance: change in radius has a large effect of resistance. Capillaries offer the highest resistance but: they are in parallel and resistance is not variable, unable to regulate resistance in the capillaries. 3: thin filament = actin, no nebulin, tni, tnc, or tnt, calponin and caldesmon = inhibit actin-myosin interactions, thin filaments anchor into dense bodies, sarcomeres aim at the dense bodies.
