Recently started taking off: for colon cancer and breast recently. Why do older people have cancer: because the proteins/ mechanisms aren"t as ef cient as they used to be. How to test for germ line rather than somatic: germ line- test the blood or the saliva, somatic- test the tumour. People with hereditary genes have a higher risk of getting various cancers: remember the head and body diagram that she drew on the board. , doesn"t skip generations- always passed down. You can test a somatic in germline- tumour baby. Most people will have sporadic cancer. look at slide 22. Ovarian cancer: very hard to treat. Why males should care- they can have an increase in prostate cancer, breast cancer and they can have children. Variants- not always damaging, basically have to wait for research to catch up. Thursday, july 28, 2016: for brca1 mutations, parp inhibitors, orally administered and targets the cancer cells, increases their quality of life- not curative.
