BUS 374 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Morale, Elton Mayo, Hierarchical Organization
Document Summary
Hawthorne studies (george elton mayo) where a series of experimental studies that showed that positive treatment of employees improved their motivation and productivity. These findings lead to revolution in worker treatment and laid the groundwork for organizational behavior: then emerged the importance of organizational environment. More and more scholars agreed that there was no one size that fits all to organizations. What design and structure that work for one setting need not work for others. An explanation of these theories as written in (http://www. uta. edu/faculty/mputnam/coms309/notes/organizationaltheor ies. html) is replicated below. Overall goal was to resolve tensions between organization and individual needs by introducing efficient operating procedures, eliminating arbitrary supervisor behavior, and motivating workers through economic incentives. Its roots go back to the industrial revolution of the late 18th and early 19th century. Classical theorists focused on the importance of structure and administrative control of performance. Great emphasis on organizational rules with little attention paid to the value of the individual.
