Chapter 4 basic probability big for midterm. Probability theory: applies to a wide range of every day applications including, games of change (gambling, google searches, voice recognition, quantum mechanics, venture capitalism, meteorology, etc. It is taught here because statistics measures the difference between observed values and expected random values. Randomness: individual outcomes are uncertain, but there is a regular distribution of outcomes in a large number of repetitions. Basic probability concepts: probability: the chance that an uncertain event will occur (always between 0 or 1) Different people may come to different opinions of a probability: since different people can interpret different probabilities based on their own calculations or intuitions, there are no ways to determine absolute true probabilities, only opinions of the probabilities. Sample space: each distinct possible outcome of variables is an event, so sample. Space is the collection of all possible events: ex) all 6 faces of a die, ex) all the possible draws of lotto 6/48 numbers.
