Language acquisitions: where did my language come from, becoming a social being, entering a symbol using society. Imitation only possible because of christian god: learning to speak, he becomes a human, language is a magical spiritual religious phenomenon (cid:862)magi(cid:272)al(cid:863) words, politeness: (cid:862)please(cid:863) a(cid:374)d (cid:862)tha(cid:374)k you(cid:863) Words to ta(cid:272)k o(cid:374) to sho(cid:449) you"re (cid:271)ei(cid:374)g polite. Way politeness is mobilized varies amongst cultures: expletives: cursing and swearing, turks and germans. Upper vs. lower: lower: direct, upper: indirect, abstracted, hate speech. We have laws that affect how we can use it: dysphe(cid:373)is(cid:373)"s a(cid:374)d euphe(cid:373)is(cid:373)s. Dysphemism: say something hard and mean to get a reaction. Two theories of language origins: tower of babel. God gave gift of language, people wanted to be equivalent. Built tower to reach heavens: god (cid:272)a(cid:373)e do(cid:449)(cid:374), ga(cid:448)e all a differe(cid:374)t la(cid:374)guage so they (cid:272)ould(cid:374)"t communicate and build the tower.
