Cmns110 reading presentation notes: masculinities in the movies kenneth mackinnon. Not so much masculinity in movies, but more of masculinity in crisis throughout the ages. Shopping list style of a lot of the genres throughout the last few decades. The main source of masculinity has been through film images. The i(cid:373)ages f(cid:396)o(cid:373) the late (cid:1005)(cid:1013)(cid:1011)(cid:1004)(cid:859)s (cid:1005)(cid:1013)(cid:1012)(cid:1004)(cid:859)s (cid:396)elied o(cid:374) ph(cid:455)si(cid:272)al size, st(cid:396)e(cid:374)gth, use of violence = making the body a source of power and control: examples: arnold schwarzenegger (terminator), sylvester stallone (rambo/rocky), The actors seemed to embody superheroes but the characters were not supermen. They were more likely to be everyday guys dealing with every day problems in extraordinary ways. They have to arm them selves figuratively and literally to become fearsome sites of resistance to evil around them and demons within them. Homoeroticism vigorously resisted through insistence on heterosexual romance/marriage, or overt homophobia, male relationships are based on roughhousing, banter / intimacy kept at bay by male bravado.
