America is the source for a lot of global conlict & warfare at the moment. Protracted period of suspension of civil liberies not as normal: state of emergency is being expressed in law and order/police tv shows. Shows providing patern of visibility and invisibility: visible: how policing happens, emphasis of tech surveillance, gadgetry and surveillance emphasis on weapons. Emphasis on clean war , tech war : invisible: vicims in other countries are rarely shown. 6,000 civilians have been killed in afghanistan (paricularly in the war on terrorism) and we don"t hear that number a lot. Thinking about authorized forms of violence : weber power to control/authorized violence . Tradiionally here"s been a lot of shows about lawyers being heroes keeping the police in check (sherry takacs: there used to be lots of shows about the legal system, But now it"s a lot of shows about policing there"s a shit.
