CMNS 262 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Panopticism
Document Summary
Week 6 reading 1 foucault, the means of correct training & the panopticism. The success of discipline depends on hierarchical observation, normalizing judgement, and their combination in a way altered to the goal. In this state the person who"s in power is extremely visible. In history observatories were used in a way where people were being monitored w/o being able to see who was doing the monitoring. The model of the panoptic like camp was in working class housing estates, hospitals, prisons, and schools. Architecture of these places changed from being able to just see the subjects but to produce a specific amount of control. Hospital was built as a place for better observation. The school was built with a training intent, to create a specific subject. The perfect displinary setting would make it possible to see everything constantly with minimal effort.
