Lesson 3 the recording industry: copyright, technology, community. Recorded music: music became a tangible, material object to be bought and sold. The recording industry: the centralization and industrialization of music"s production and consumption around audio media. Copyright law and the claim for royalties was based on the registration of melodies and lyrics: musical attributes that are emphasized in the european musical tradition. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, the music industry was based mainly on the distribution and consumption of sheet music. (text music rather than recording) The precedents for copyright were established during an era in which the written text was the universal form; precedents that are still largely in place today.
