CMNS 349 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Actor Model, Cognitive Model, Ecosystem Management
Document Summary
Rational actor model: consumers motivated by rational self interest: enlightenment model, basis of most economics. However, in real life, decisions may be influenced by other factors: values, norms, peers, beliefs, habits. Jackson"s argument: function in a somewhat outdated cognitive model. Dominant social paradigm: selfregarding (self-interested values, belief in infinite abundance, faith in science and technology, laissez-faire economy, new environmental paradigm, respect for natural limits and biospheric integrity, oriented around altruistic and biospheric values. Values = embedded and promoted by social paradigms. The more you are likely to accept altruistic and biospheric values, the more accepting you are towards new environmental paradigm. Ex: polar bear being trapped to strengthen values. But the problem with this way of thinking- You get people to care about environment, and then they will purchase more ethnical products. Standards of behaviour we develop by watching others. Trial and error practically impossible for most learning processes.
