Promises of cmns & technology in the digital age. Sociological imagination: society"s effect on us & how we affect society. We use theories to determine or predict things. Globalization: cmns is the hardest globalizing community: trades, immigration, networking. We"ve domesticated globalization because we"re so accustomed to it. Blackout law was challenged by social media in canada. Norms of certain cultures/ages/societies have different perspectives on social media"s power. Skeptics of technology; feel we"re controlled by technology and does negative things to ; society & humanity; shown through art & movies. Utopia people feel technology does positive things for society; usually expressed by corporations. Technological determinism ; ex social media caused the riots. Challenge to public sphere is that media doesn"t tell us what to think but it tells us what to think about. Use of gratification model: people choose the media they want based on what they need. Encoding & decoding model: people interpret media different based on their social status.
