Connecting to the internet: to access the internet, your computer must first connect to a gateway computer. If you have a desktop computer, your gateway will be provided by your internet service. These computers (along with the gateways) are all part of the backbone of the internet that is, the internet"s overall framework. These computers might be ordinary desktop pcs, or they might be specialized devices called routers. Their job is to guide information in the right direction: there are several ways that your computer can connect to a gateway computer: Modem connects via phone lines, sending information in the same way as a phone call.
