Symbolic systems: rules and representaions machine, knowledge and reasoning: more it can do, less human-like. Symbols and rules: not clear how the brain works with them. Connecionism: soluion to see how the brain works: ideas inluence percepion/ expectaions inluence, problem: hard to understand: no explicit symbols. To understand how cogniive systems work, we need to understand how it interacts with the world. Goal: see how the world interacts, makes a diference to the way we think, how our acions and motors. Ed hutchins: anthropologist: how teams of people sail batleships: distributed system, symbols in the world mater to how things get done. Example: bartender"s problem: use disincively shaped glasses at the ime of the order, expert memory is the same as novices if you take away the tools they"re using: environment.
