Cbc was one of the great nation-building exercises in canadian history. Took the nature flow of information and entertainment. Early days psb had a paternalistic quality. Unify the country and educate and bring high culture to the masses. Emphasis on proper language, respect for authority, and broad civic education. Goal is to build social capital by bridging, witnessing and connecting and by addressing viewers and listeners as citizens rather than consumers. The ultimate mission of a public broadcaster is to contribute to the moral economy of the nation. Success should be measured by how programs broaden the human experience and reach excellence. Private broadcasters have simply abandoned their responsibilities with regard to ensuring a well-informed public due to business models are based primarily. Psb are also responsible for maintaining at least some of the checks and balances that make democracies work. Psb act as a counterweight to the crushing power enjoyed by media conglomerates.
